Llama Pack in Grand Gulch, Utah
Invisible from the Pinyon/Juniper plateau of Cedar Mesa that dominates
the landscape of Southeastern Utah; Grand Gulch is a hidden canyon,
hundreds of feet deep that stretches south towards the San Juan
River. On our visit to Grand Gulch, we will camp under red sandstone
cliffs and discover the dwellings of an ancient civilization, while
pondering the meaning of petroglyphs and rock art. We'll use a few
charming llamas to carry food and extra gear, allowing us to eat
in style and walk without heavy packs.

Encountering petroglyphs, exploring ancient kivas,
and finding remains of pottery and corncobs are just a few ways
to see into the past of this fascinating culture. We'll keep our
eyes open along the trail for the variety of bird species, wildflowers,
and of course, the hidden cliff dwellings high above the canyon
floor. Experienced guides will provide their insights into this
culture's religious and subsistence practices and the intimate ways
in which the Anasazi connected to the landscape.
We will hike
(approx. 5-6 miles a day), eat, sleep and relax in this incredibly
spiritual place, traveling along the canyon bottom with excursions
up several side canyons, such as Bullet Canyon to explore Jailhouse
Ruin, and Perfect Kiva and Sheik's Canyon to view the unique Green
Mask. Cool nighttime temperatures are refreshing after the day's
sun, allowing for some inspiring stargazing and great conversation
over a hearty dinner.
On our day out
of the Gulch, we will stop in Moab, Utah for lunch and and then
drive to Salt Lake City for our last evening's dinner at the famous
Red Iguana!
